Which Smono is best for beginners?

If you want to adjust as little as possible, the Smono Start is a good fit; if you're looking for more control with still simple operation, the Smono 5 and Smono 3 are the obvious choices. What matters is how much you want to control yourself.

  • Smono Start: The manufacturer describes it as a device for anyone who wants to manage without a display and lots of settings. The temperature range is between 200 and 220 °C, and vibrations signal when the temperature has been reached and when the session ends. It is heated up after roughly 30 seconds.
  • Smono 5: You set the temperature (160–230 °C) and session length yourself, and the colour LED display shows the values. According to the manufacturer, the titanium chamber holds 0.4 g, and the heat-up time is around 20 seconds.
  • Smono 3: Three buttons, an OLED display with temperature, battery level and timer, plus a session length of four minutes. At 136 g and 5.1 × 7.6 × 2.5 cm, it is very compact.

If you want to fine-tune airflow and temperature from the start, you can also go for the Smono Balu: according to the manufacturer, it remembers the last temperature selected and offers sessions of four, six or ten minutes. You'll find general criteria for choosing a device in our vaporizer buying guide.

Which Smono has a removable battery?

Only the Smono Balu and the Smono Lunari have a removable battery. On the Start, 3, 4.5, 5 and 70s, the battery is built in according to the manufacturer.

  • Smono Lunari: It uses an 18650 cell with a stated capacity of 3200 mAh. It can be removed and swapped for a charged cell.
  • Smono Balu: The battery is removable and replaceable; charging is via USB-C. The manufacturer does not state a capacity on its product pages.

A removable battery is handy if you want to carry a charged spare cell instead of depending on a power socket when you're out. For models with a built-in battery, the run time depends on temperature, session length and usage according to the manufacturer. For the Smono 4.5, Smono 5 and Smono 70s, the manufacturer points out that operation while connected to the charging cable is not intended. You'll find more about batteries in our guide How to charge and care for vaporizer batteries.

Which Smono has the biggest battery?

Among the devices with a built-in battery, the Smono 4.5 has the highest capacity at 3000 mAh. The highest stated capacity in this comparison belongs to the Lunari at 3200 mAh, but as a removable cell. According to the manufacturer, the Smono 4.5 charges via USB-C in around 90 minutes and the Smono 70s in under two hours.

Convection or conduction in Smono vaporizers: what's the difference?

With convection, hot air flows through the filling material and the heating element does not touch it. With conduction, the material sits directly against the heated chamber wall and is warmed through contact. Explained in detail in Convection, conduction, hybrid: heating methods at a glance.

This is how the manufacturer classifies the models:

  • Convection: Smono Start, Smono 3, Smono 4.5 (called “Air-Hi” by the manufacturer), Smono Lunari
  • Conduction: Smono 5, Smono Balu, Smono 70s (dual conduction, the chamber is heated from two sides)

The manufacturer describes the differences in practice as follows: conduction devices are ready quickly – the Smono 5 after around 20 seconds, the Smono 70s after 20 to 25 seconds, the Balu after about 30 seconds. With conduction, the load should be stirred in between so that nothing sticks to the chamber wall. With the dual conduction of the 70s, according to the manufacturer, there is no cold zone at the top, so stirring is needed less often. For the convection vaporizer Lunari, by contrast, the manufacturer describes a deliberate, slow draw. For the Smono Start, the manufacturer highlights convection in a pen format and the insulated air path. According to the manufacturer, the Smono 3 heats up in around 25 seconds.

How do the Smono 4.5 and Smono Lunari differ?

Both use convection, but they differ in battery and temperature range. The Smono 4.5 has a built-in 3000 mAh battery, the Smono Lunari a removable 18650 cell.

  • Temperature: Smono 4.5 160–220 °C, Lunari 100–220 °C.
  • Mouthpiece: According to the manufacturer, the 4.5 comes with a glass and a stainless steel mouthpiece; the Lunari has a magnetic ceramic mouthpiece that rotates 360°.
  • Chamber: 4.5 ceramic, Lunari stainless steel.
  • Controls: The 4.5 has an airflow control and a freely adjustable session timer; the Lunari has a five- or ten-minute timer and three-click operation.
  • Use: According to the manufacturer, the Lunari is intended for herbs and concentrates.

How do the Smono 5 and Smono 70s differ?

Both heat by conduction and heat up quickly. The Smono 5 has the larger titanium chamber (0.4 g), the Smono 70s the higher maximum temperature (240 °C) and a 0.3 g stainless steel chamber.

The Smono 70s also has a combined silicone and ceramic filter system and a session timer of three to six minutes. The Smono 5 shows temperature, battery level and remaining time on a colour LED display and gives feedback via vibration. According to the manufacturer, the Smono 5's electronics detect when you are drawing and adjust the heating output during the draw.

How do you clean a Smono vaporizer?

The manufacturer recommends cleaning the chamber and mouthpiece regularly with the included brush; according to the manufacturer, isopropyl alcohol loosens stubborn residue. The exact procedure for your model is described in the respective manual. You'll find a detailed step-by-step guide under Cleaning your vaporizer.

  1. Switch off the device and let the chamber cool down.
  2. Remove residue from the chamber with the included brush.
  3. Remove and clean the mouthpiece; use isopropyl alcohol for stubborn residue.
  4. Check screens and seals and replace them if worn.

Wear parts such as screens, seals and mouthpieces are model-specific. So always choose spare parts based on the exact model name of your device.
